Before field stripping, the priority is to confirm the gun is completely unloaded. Treat every firearm as loaded and perform a thorough clearance: remove the magazine, rack the slide, and visually and physically inspect the chamber and magazine well to ensure no cartridge is present. Only after you can confidently declare it clear should you begin disassembly. This safety step is what prevents any accidental discharge during the cleaning process. Other actions like checking the sights, loading the magazine, or pointing the muzzle at a target do not contribute to safe field stripping and can create unnecessary risk.
